- Say name
first and then command (give pup time to respond before helping
pup into position)
- When walking,
talk to your pup - telling them how good they are by walking
correctly. Constantly encourage your puppy. Tell them "no sniff"
if they are constantly sniffing the ground and "hup-hup" if your
pup lags behind. You can use "easy" or "steady" if your pup is
pulling too hard.
- We
are NOT to use the commands "right", "left", "heel" or
"leave it" with
our puppies.
- Do not talk
to pup when doing sit, down, or rest commands. Simply say their name
and the command.
- Be sure to
praise your puppy whenever they do something correctly; always correct
your puppy if they have done something wrong - both on and off the
leash.
- When you do
the "come" command, make sure you say the name and command before
you snap the leash for pup to turn around.
- Make pup sit
before eating, greeting people or going out the door. Tell pup
to rest before getting out of a car.
- Go over commands
every day - if your pup is having trouble with something, pay
particular attention to that command. New pups should not start all
commands at once. Check with us when to introduce harder commands.
- If pup is
shy or afraid of situations, introduce them slowly. Encourage
pup to "check it out".
- Make sure
pup gets plenty of exposure. Start around light traffic, gradually
working up to busier areas as pup gets more confident. Always walk
facing traffic until pup is confident.
- Do NOT play
tug-of-war with your puppy.
- Check with
us before using a training collar. They are NOT to be used on
young pups.
- Keep hands
away from your puppy's face when playing.
- Always walk
and play with pup before leaving in the morning.
- When going
for a walk, do not let pup greet other dogs. If they are used to
doing this, it will be much harder for them in training.
- Remember to
put pup in crate or puppu proof the room before leaving.
- Always remove
pup's collar before putting them in their crate.
- Remember -
training collars are for training and walking only. They are
not to be worn in the house. Have pup wear a leather or nylon collar
with tags. Make sure pup cannot choke or escape from the collar.
- Your pup is
to be on leash at all times outdoors. Puppy parks are NOT to be used
by our puppies.
- Any major
or chronic illness or emergency, notify the Seeing Eye rep and
us
- Have your
vet contact The Seeing Eye for permission before x-rays or extensive
testing is done or for any procedure that will exceed $150.00.
- Always carry
a puppy kit whereever you go ( paper towels, plastic bags, etc)
- Feel free
to contact us with any questions you may have.
